Once I learned how to discuss my bipolar disorder, I stopped defining myself by my illness and started talking about my emotions as well as my struggles.

When someone you love has bipolar disorder, here are some questions you can ask. Understanding this disease is an important thing in this world.

I am a lot of things; some people might think I am too many things. But I am all the things that you are, sometimes just in greater quantities. I am also worth loving.

I wish I could say that every mistake I’ve made, every lousy decision, is all a manifestation of my faulty brain chemistry and mental illness.

Two months ago, I filed for disability for unmedicated bipolar disorder. I had spent weeks dangling from tiring hands over a spiky precipice – or so it seemed. There were days of crying at my desk, days of inexplicable panic attacks in the face of a normal workload.

In honor of World Bipolar Day, I present a sample stream of consciousness based on my experiences living with this disorder.
