Too many voices are being left out of this conversation. And from where I’m standing as a gun crime survivor, a march isn’t even close to a solution.

It's Gun Violence Awareness Day, and it's time for everyone to take action on this critical issue. Here are just a few ways to work towards preventing the needless and tragic rate of gun violence in America.

You should teach your kids what to do if they encounter a gun, but we as adults should do what we can to prevent that from happening in the first place. One group of adults who can be especially helpful on that front is pediatricians. Some of them are hoping to be part of an effort to reduce gun accidents by talking to parents about gun safety.

Evidently, the man reached the security checkpoint of the Visitors Center and pulled a gun on the security force, whose job it is to prevent people with guns from infiltrating the Capitol complex and taking out US lawmakers. They shot the guy and sent him off to the the hospital for surgery. His condition is currently unknown.

There is a bigger problem at hand here: the toy industry feels that it is appropriate and lucrative to include play guns in children’s toys.
