Spotted: Downtown SF
What are you up to today?
I'm a reporter based in San Mateo, but I had a meeting in the city. I come to the city a couple times a week. I just had tea, and caught up with a friend.
What's your occupation?
I'm the technology reporter for Women's Wear Daily. I actually do street style sometimes too, so I have a heart for what you're doing.
Oh thanks!
Yeah, so, I primarily cover the intersection of fashion, tech, retail, e-commerce, and all that stuff.
How long have you been doing that?
I just started! This is my first month at WWD. Previously, I was at the San Francisco Chronicle as a style reporter.
What do you like most about what you do?
My favorite thing is meeting new people and finding out what's going to be in the news a couple months from now. So I get to talk about all these really cool ideas. That's my favorite part.
Are there any stories you've worked on lately that you particularly enjoyed?
I did a couple stories for the Chronicle recently — one was on personal styling and services that are available to the masses. I think that's really interesting. I've also been researching another story on consignment options for men — how you traditionally think of women using consignment and having all these startups that are female-focused, but now men are starting to buy and sell secondhand clothes. And then I got to interview Rashida Jones at a Wired magazine event. She's really cool!
That's great! What was she like in person?
Very nice, very real — just as you'd expect. Very authentic.
What's something that's caught your interest lately?
Oh gosh, that's a hard question. Let me think. You know what I'm really interested in? The ability to customize and make your own clothing and accessories. I think that's really exciting. Usually it's a luxury, but now it starting to become more accessible.
In what way are you seeing that happen?
Well there's a number of companies, thanks to tech! Shoes of Prey is a really cool company based out of Australia that allows you to build your own shoe. It's amazing. I just had a suit custom-made for me in Sacramento, so I'm really curious to see how far I can take customization.
What challenge have you overcome recently?
I just transitioned from working in an office to working at home. I was nervous, but excited. It's turned out much better than even I could have imagined. That's been really cool because it gives me energy to get out of the house when I have the opportunity, instead of being exhausted at the end of the day.
I just wanted to ask you about your personal style because I love what you're wearing today.
Well my personal style is usually a lot more colorful, and I usually wear dresses, but this outfit I got recently. It's wonderful. You can wear it for almost any occasion, it's appropriate, and it's literally one piece. I got ready in a huge hurry today, so I didn't really think about it. That's why I love this outfit. It has pockets! My weight fluctuates, so you can basically be any size, and it's, like, a huge range. It's comfortable. You never know what the weather is going to be, because it's a lot warmer where I live. So if it's warm, I can roll up my sleeves. This is from Club Monaco.
It's beautiful! I love your bag too!
My bag was custom-made for me in India. A friend just came back from India and had it made for me. It's a satchel with a little green inset. And it's actually made out of camel, because in India cows are sacred. So that's something a little different. And then my shoes — I almost exclusively get my shoes at DSW and Nordstrom. These are from DSW — I can't remember the brand. But I like them because they're heels but they're also pretty sturdy so I can walk all around in them. And then my watch I'm testing for Apple. And then my glasses, I have six pairs that I wear all the time. These are from Made Eyewear and they let you build your own.
