A new survey finds that single folks using online dating tools are likely to have sex early on, with the intent of assessing the relationship's potential.
While some people say having sex too soon means girls are sluts and boys are potential cow buyers who will settle for free milk when offered — or something like that — the chief science officer at Match disagrees. Anthropologist Helen Fisher says early sex is part of a concept she calls “slow love,” where couples take time to get to know a partner well before committing. That includes knowing them well sexually.
Fisher says sex can tell you a lot about a person, including “their health, patience, and ability to change their style to accommodate your needs.”
Speaking from personal experience, she’s dead on. Sex and airline delays tell you nearly everything you need to know about a person. Compatibility, either in bed or when you’re stranded at the gate due to bad weather in your arrival city, are both vital to a healthy relationship.
Online daters aren’t having more sexual partners than other singles, but they are more focused on the future. 58% say they think about marriage on the first date. What they don’t want to think about is divorce, so they’re being very deliberate in picking a life — and sex — partner over the long term.
