According to legend, champion boxer Muhammad Ali would abstain from sex while he was in training. The same cannot be said for some of the athletes headed to the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio — if the preparations for the athletes are any indication, the Olympic Village may be one sexy spot!
The International Olympic Committee is reportedly handing out a LOT of condoms for the 17-day stay most athletes will have in the Village. The IOC has 350,000 traditional condoms, 100,000 receptive condoms, and 175,000 packets of lube on hand. That’s an average of about 42 condoms per athlete — enough for 2.5 sexual encounters per day!

Handing out safer sex supplies to Olympic athletes isn’t a new idea — there were 150,000 condoms distributed in the Olympic Village at the 2012 Games in London. There was so much hooking up going on there that they joked that they crashed the “dating” app Grindr. This year’s contraceptive bounty is so big that tabloids are already calling Rio the raunchiest Olympics ever.
While I’m over here having a sex-positive moment of, “Yay, lube! Let’s make all that victory sex REALLY GOOD sex!” I’m also wondering if part of the rationale for handing out so many barrier contraceptives has to do with the prevalence of the Zika virus in the region. The CDC says Zika, which can cause significant birth defects, can be transmitted sexually, and recommends barrier methods such as condoms to prevent the spread of the virus.
Whatever the reason for passing out condoms — safety or pleasure — here’s hoping all the athletes do their best — on the field and in bed!
