Feminist icon and author Camille Paglia called out Taylor Swift, Tina Fey, and the concept of “girl squads” in an essay penned for The Hollywood Reporter last week, and this feminist is left shaking her damn head.
Paglia called Swift a “Nazi Barbie” and suggested that the problem with women’s lives is that career women now lack the multigenerational shared approach to domestic bliss. Apparently, women wouldn’t need friends and silly socializing if they all just went back to the kitchen and did more women’s work.
In case that wasn’t bad enough, Paglia went on to remind women that they “need to study the immensely productive dynamic of male bonding in history. With their results-oriented teamwork, men largely have escaped the sexual jealousy, emotionalism and spiteful turf wars that sometimes dog women.”
Earth to Paglia: Toxic masculinity is, well, toxic. Women aren’t to blame for being oppressed, and men certainly aren’t to praise for enjoying the comfortable role of oppressor. If women want to carve out equality that is based on true equality, they can’t turn to men as their role models.
