The Oxford English Dictionary (i.e. the bible of modern language) just added a few words as fiercely as Beyonce drops a new album. But, alas, which illustrious words made the cut?
Party girls and trans allies, rejoice! Among the 500 added entries, behold the new words:
Cisgender
Hot Mess
Defined as “designating a person whose sense of personal identity corresponds to the sex and gender assigned to him or her at birth,” Bernard Reed of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society spoke about the importance of the word’s inclusion to the LGBT community.
“Gender non-conforming people need cisgender allies,” said Reed. “Some cisgender people have for many years been staunch advocates of the rights of gender non-conforming individuals and it is heartening to see that many, many more are now respecting their identities and entitlements to equal treatment.”
Out of the 500 spankin' new entries, cisgender seems to be the most appropriate. Though "hot mess" — which the OED defined as a person or thing that is spectacularly unsuccessful or disordered — is admittedly a glorious, and long-awaited addition, the word cisgender has great importance. Hot mess may not be the most giggle-inducing of the bunch, as “jeggings,” “twerk,” “webisode,” “presidentiable,” and “half-ass” were added as well.
Scrabble, anyone?
