"I spend a lot of time reminding people to breathe –– I'm a massage therapist. I was just practicing today releasing the diaphragm, because people just lose the ability to breathe properly. Often they can only breathe through one little piece of their body so then you lose the ability to breathe out to the side, and you're only doing it from your tummy or any other combination. A lot of the time we lose that ability –– either through too much holding our arms down to our sides, too much sitting at a desk, too much stress, or holding our breath in order to dance or do something difficult. So after a while, your brain shuts that down and continues using the other parts of your breathing system. So what I do is help people learn what's not working and do some neuromuscular re-programming. It sounds complex, but it's really simple stuff. And then they can breathe the way they're supposed to."
