Have a memorable date night with my husband.
I’m not going to lie or sugarcoat my feelings right now: I’m nervous about going from a mom of one to a mom of two.
My son is 7 so he, my husband, and I have had seven years of time as “just the three of us.”
We are super excited about the birth of his little sister and the three of us are overjoyed about this change, but that doesn’t make it any less difficult.
I’m sure that, in the grand scheme of things, our transition will be perfectly imperfect and we will all adjust smoothly.
But before that day hits us — before I become a mom of two — there are five things that I want to do:
1. Plan both family and one-on-one time with our little man.
This is something that we have been doing since we announced to our son that he will be a big brother, and it has been really amazing for us all.
We have always been a family that’s big into family time, but adding more alone time with both mommy and daddy doing special things has been great!
At the end of the day, we want him to know that while things will change when his sister gets here, he can always come to us for anything, and we will always make time for him.
2. Enjoy alone time that doesn’t involve anything mother-related.
This is a big one for me because I know that personally, I will be giving almost all of myself to this new little baby in a couple short months and I want to be refreshed and prepared for that.
Alone time is crucial in being the best mom that I can be.
3. Have a memorable date night with my husband.
Like many couples, my husband and I don’t put nearly as much effort into date night as we should.
Last week, we were randomly able to meet up for a quick lunch together while our son was in school and we both looked up at each other as the bill came and said, “We've gotta do more of this!”
If I can squeeze in just one more night out in the city at a wonderful restaurant or local adventure for just the two of us, I will be a happy mama.
4. Put a few post-baby family plans on the calendar.
I know it sounds completely bananas to be thinking that far in the future, but I’m a planner by nature, and there is a method to my madness.
In preparation for the new baby, we’ve put together the crib, have received many baby-centric deliveries at our door, and even had a few days where the stroller sat in our son’s room before we got the stroller hook in place.
I want him to know that even once the baby gets here, we are thinking of the family as a whole — and family plans will give us all something to look forward to at the same time.
5. Sleep.
Pregnancy exhaustion has definitely crept up on me, and my strong entrepreneurial spirit has been making me push through and just keep going.
This is something I know needs to change. I need to start embracing naps and taking it slower.
