If You Don't Own A Midi Skirt Yet, Now Is The Time

The midi skirt has been both loved and hated in fashion’s history. In the 40s, it was the silhouette of choice. In the 60s, it was a symbol of “the Man" oppressing women.

It wasn’t until 1970, when John Burr, head of Women’s Wear Daily, declared that 1970 would be “the year of the midi.” Women were not convinced, and according to a 1970 poll facilitated by the Daily News, 83% of women wore skirts above the knee solely to defy the fashion trend. To put it bluntly, “stop trying to make the midi skirt happen, it’s not going to happen.”

That all changed in 2011, when designers started showing the midi skirt in ways that felt fresh again. Perhaps it was a reaction to the designer denim movement of the early aughts. Perhaps it was a resurgence of 40s feminism after a decade of lowrider jeans and trucker hats—hard to say. But whatever zeitgeist has been blowing in the fashion winds, women have slowly caught on.

For fall, midi skirts remain a key trend, and now is the perfect time to invest in one. Here’s three ways to make the midi work in your wardrobe:

Cubicle Couture

For work, give yourself a vintage throwback with a fuller skirt, a buttoned-up blouse and ladylike pumps. This gingham Topshop skirt and Everlane oxford will also do the trick.

Weekend Luxe

We love a midi skirt with a big chunky sweater and sneakers for the weekend. Try J.Crew’s slub sweatshirt with a printed skirt and Vans!

Night Moves

Nighttime is your chance to make the midi sexy. A modern box pleat skirt with a mock turtleneck crop top is the answer. Finish with your trusted ankle-strap sandals
