Tragic: in beautiful San Diego, a rash of ravenous fires have spread through tens of thousands of acres while destroying dozens of homes and businesses. Luckily, the fires—spurred on through a mix of triple-digit heat, dry ground cover and the powerful Santa Ana winds—are mostly now controlled thanks to the work of some badass firefighters.
Below is a video that shows a spectator's view of the hellish landscape. But first, a quick update:
- Though people have been arrested on suspicion of arson, there is not enough evidence to tie anyone to the flames just yet.
- The Cocos fire (which ruined 36 homes) is almost completely detained: as of this morning, 89% of it was under control.
- Despite the ferocity of the Cocos fire, there are no documented injuries.
- The Camp Pendleton fires (involving areas including Combat, Las Pulgas and Tomahawk) are 97% contained.
- The fires at Camp Pendleton make up the Basilone Complex. Together they burned 22,000 acres, which is 18% of the military base.
- The Poinsettia fire is totally contained, but a body was found in the wreckage. The person is currently unidentified.
- Oceanside, Fallbrook and Bernardo fires are also contained.
- The Bernardo fire was (allegedly) caused by a mishap on a construction project.
